The online version of the property surveys are here!

As you are aware, this year the property committee is working on developing a long-range property plan. This plan will be presented to the board of directors and will help set the course for GSMH’s future property needs. In order to help the committee develop this plan, we want input from GSMH Girl Scouts, Girl Scout parents and Girl Scout volunteers.

There was a paper version released earlier this month, so if you’ve already filled it out and sent it in – thanks! If not, use one of the appropriate links below to fill yours out.

The deadline to submit the survey is February 15.

Thank you so much for your help in setting the future for Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland!

Becky Miller and Mara Teeslink aka “Chiknhead” and “Hershey” are starting a backpacking interest group. This group is for girls and adults alike! Troop leaders can bring their girls to learn along with them, or try it out on their own without the girls. Girls need to be at least in the 7th grade and everyone must weigh at least 100 lbs (so they can carry the packs!). Interested girls and adults will first attend a Shakedown to cover some basics about what equipment is needed, menu planning and a practice hike. There is basic equipment available for use and the destination of the trip will be determined by the group.

Shakedown is planned for September 24, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Finbrooke Program Center Rogersville, MO and the backpacking weekend is planned for October 8-9th somewhere south of I-44! If you are interested, or have any questions please contact Becky Miller at talknwaters@cebridge.net.

National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, in unison, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. National Volunteer Week is about taking action, encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change—discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation.

During National Volunteer Week, Girl Scouts of the USA pays tribute to innovative volunteers for making a difference. National Volunteer Week is not only our moment in time to celebrate our volunteers, but to enable a nation to share ideas, practices, and stories, wherever they happen, and shaping a movement to re-imagine the notion of citizenship for the 21st century.

says CEO Jennifer M. Orban, “The girls will take action by planning youth services projects for
their community.” Projects could include movie or karaoke nights, holiday parties, and other
activities. “It really depends on what the girls choose to do,” says Orban.

Girls who are interested in joining this group may attend the next meeting on Monday, October
25 at 5:00 pm at Oasis Worship Center in Caruthersville. For more information, please contact

GSMH is pleased to announce openings for our inaugural FLL robotics team. We are looking for six to eight girls in grades 4 through 8 who would be excited to take part in this challenge!

What is FLL?

The purpose of FIRST teams is to engage girls in exciting robotics programs that build leadership skills in science, engineering and technology. You will learn to build and program a LEGO robot to do tasks on a course and you will compete with your team against other young people and their robots!

What is the commitment?

The commitment is to meet once a week (perhaps more often right before competition) and the ability to travel with us to at least one competition. The competitions begin in November. You will also have a chance to put on programs during and after school to show other students what FIRST Lego League and robotics is about!

When and where will we meet?

We will meet once a week at the Hallsville Elementary School in Hallsville, MO. This is north of Columbia, MO. We may increase our number of meetings as we get closer to a competition.

How much does it cost?

We are asking that the girls participating pay 20 dollars for the entire program. You may also need to buy your food on the days of competitions.

I have a friend who wants to do this too but she is not a Girl Scout. Can she be part of the team?

That is just fine! Because of all of the different pathways in Girl Scouting, this Series pathway is a great way to participate!

Can my parents help?

We would love to have parent involvement! Parents are great support when preparing for and traveling to competitions.

How do I sign up?

We would like to have the team in place within a couple of weeks. Please submit a short essay by Friday, September 24 on why you would like to participate on the GSMH Robo-Girls team to:

Traditions such as the Girl Scout Cookie Program, camping, and skill-building badges remain in place, but the additions of six program pathways and an outcomes-based program model have made the program more flexible for today’s families. Now, girls still have the option of joining a year-long Girl Scout troop, but they may also participate in other Girl Scout pathways – to addition to the troop experience or in lieu of it. Girl Scout pathways include one-day programs, 4-6 week series, camp, travel, and online activities. Whether they choose one or all of the pathways, all Girl Scouts benefit from fifteen tangible, research-based outcomes such as a strong sense of self, practical life skills, healthy relationships, and feeling empowered to make a difference.

Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is pleased to offer a wide variety of program opportunities for girls in 2010-2011; topics include career exploration, financial literacy, science, theater, sports, travel, and more. Girls are encouraged to make decisions about what and where they want to explore, and then to work together to plan and budget according to their age-level skills. With program events as inexpensive as $3 and annual membership dues of only $12, Girl Scouts is a low-cost investment with incalculable life-long benefits. Financial assistance is available for membership dues, council-sponsored programs, and uniform pieces for girls with demonstrated need.

For more information about joining Girl Scouts, please visit www.girlscouts.org/today or contact Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland at (877) 312-4764 or gscouts@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

It’s nearly time for new phone books to land on front porches and in business lobbies. Local Girl Scouts have a creative way for your old phone books to be re-used! Now through July 31, Girl Scouts will be collecting old phone books for Nestle Purina’s Project PetLitter. “Yesterday’s News” is pet litter made from recycled newspapers, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, and other paper. “This is a great, hands-on way for girls to connect with community members and to practice the ‘use resources wisely’ part of the Girl Scout Law,” says Jennifer M. Orban, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland. Girl Scout troops also benefit by receiving proceeds from Nestle Purina PetCare rewards for each book collected. Last year Girl Scouts collected more than 67,000 phonebooks and earned more than $3,000 in proceeds to use toward leadership activities and service projects.

The drop-off locations in Springfield include all Dillon’s grocery stores and the Girl Scout Administrative Service Center at 210 S. Ingram Mill Road. Area businesses may also call Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland toll-free at 1-877-312-4764 x1137 or email smcall@girlscoutsmoheartland.org to have a Girl Scout troop assigned to pick up old phonebooks.
