The recent disaster in Joplin has left many businesses without operating space, many of which are looking to reopen as quickly as possible. As many of you are aware, our Joplin Service Center has been on the market since June 2010, after the board of directors voted last year to sell it and move operations to a storefront facility. A sales contract for our service center was submitted to us on Friday, May 27, and the board of directors approved it on Wednesday, June 1.

We recognize that this catastrophic event has disrupted many lives, and we are dedicated to make the transition process as seamless as possible for the girls, volunteers and staff in Joplin. The board also approved a lease for space one mile from the current service center location, in the Crown Plaza at 1202 S. Rangeline Road, Suites 8 & 9. This space will accommodate our staffing needs, house retail operations and a seasonal cookie cupboard, and provide a location for members to drop off paperwork.

We have received a closing date of June 30 regarding the sales contract for the Joplin Service Center. The last day for operations at this building was close of business on Friday, June 17. As you are aware, we will be leasing a space at 1202 S. Rangeline Road. We will need to do some remodeling before the office can be opened for business. We are working as quickly as possible to make this a quick turnaround, but there will be some transition time in which we will not be able to conduct business from the new facility, including retail shop services. To help provide good service to our members, customers in service units 701, 702, 703, 704, 705, 706, 707, 710, and 711 will receive free shipping on GSMH retail orders through our GSMH web site or through our mail order/phone order process. Free shipping will remain in effect until the retail services are up and running at the new facility on Rangeline.

If you need to turn in registrations or other paperwork, continue mailing them to the current Joplin Service Center address of 1029 E. 7th Street, Joplin, MO 64801. Please do not bring anything to the 7th St. address or the Rangeline address.

We are working hard to make this a smooth transition, and we appreciate your patience during this time.

They saved $250 from troop fundraisers to support their service project idea. But when they asked the girls who lived in the Habitat for Humanity home what they needed for their rooms, the girls said they had everything they really needed – but that they had a neighbor in Marble Hill who had just moved, and had no furniture or decorations in her room.

The Girl Scouts didn’t miss a beat, taking this new friend shopping for bedroom furniture and accessories. They even set up the room and did a suspenseful room unveiling for her. “The look on her face was priceless,” wrote troop volunteers BJ Grindstaff and Cherly Dowd, “[We] all learned a very important lesson that day.” And they’ll continue to learn lessons together; the new neighbor is joining Girl Scouts!

“This is such a wonderful example of Girl Scouts taking action in their local community,” says Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland CEO Jennifer M. Orban, “These girls, and the girls who generously passed up the troop’s gift, really demonstrate the power that girls have.” For more information on how to join, volunteer, reconnect or donate to Girl Scouts, contact Community/Membership Development Specialist Amy Ybarra at 877-312-4764 x 1525 or aybarra@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

About the Girl Scout Leadership Experience

Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent leadership development
organization for girls in grades K-12. With 3.3 million girl and adult members worldwide, Girl
Scouts is the leading authority on girls’ healthy development. Today’s Girl Scout Leadership
Experience has evolved to fit a wide variety of interests of schedules. With six program
pathways – events, series, camp, troops, travel, and virtual – girls have more options and more
reasons to join than ever before. Through hands-on learning opportunities and a girl-led
decision-making process, the Girl Scout Leadership Experience empowers girls to discover a
strong sense of self, connect with others in a changing world, and take action to help make the
world a better place.

About Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland

Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland has a membership of approximately 16,000 girls and
6,000 adults across 68 counties in central and southern Missouri, southeast Kansas, and
northeast Oklahoma. With the support of community partners, donors, and volunteers, we
mentor and support girls as they develop crucial life skills and prepare to take the lead – today,
tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives.

GSMH is pleased to announce openings for our inaugural FLL robotics team. We are looking for six to eight girls in grades 4 through 8 who would be excited to take part in this challenge!

What is FLL?

The purpose of FIRST teams is to engage girls in exciting robotics programs that build leadership skills in science, engineering and technology. You will learn to build and program a LEGO robot to do tasks on a course and you will compete with your team against other young people and their robots!

What is the commitment?

The commitment is to meet once a week (perhaps more often right before competition) and the ability to travel with us to at least one competition. The competitions begin in November. You will also have a chance to put on programs during and after school to show other students what FIRST Lego League and robotics is about!

When and where will we meet?

We will meet once a week at the Hallsville Elementary School in Hallsville, MO. This is north of Columbia, MO. We may increase our number of meetings as we get closer to a competition.

How much does it cost?

We are asking that the girls participating pay 20 dollars for the entire program. You may also need to buy your food on the days of competitions.

I have a friend who wants to do this too but she is not a Girl Scout. Can she be part of the team?

That is just fine! Because of all of the different pathways in Girl Scouting, this Series pathway is a great way to participate!

Can my parents help?

We would love to have parent involvement! Parents are great support when preparing for and traveling to competitions.

How do I sign up?

We would like to have the team in place within a couple of weeks. Please submit a short essay by Friday, September 24 on why you would like to participate on the GSMH Robo-Girls team to:

It’s nearly time for new phone books to land on front porches and in business lobbies. Local Girl Scouts have a creative way for your old phone books to be re-used! Now through July 31, Girl Scouts will be collecting old phone books for Nestle Purina’s Project PetLitter. “Yesterday’s News” is pet litter made from recycled newspapers, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, and other paper. “This is a great, hands-on way for girls to connect with community members and to practice the ‘use resources wisely’ part of the Girl Scout Law,” says Jennifer M. Orban, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland. Girl Scout troops also benefit by receiving proceeds from Nestle Purina PetCare rewards for each book collected. Last year Girl Scouts collected more than 67,000 phonebooks and earned more than $3,000 in proceeds to use toward leadership activities and service projects.

The drop-off locations in Springfield include all Dillon’s grocery stores and the Girl Scout Administrative Service Center at 210 S. Ingram Mill Road. Area businesses may also call Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland toll-free at 1-877-312-4764 x1137 or email smcall@girlscoutsmoheartland.org to have a Girl Scout troop assigned to pick up old phonebooks.

About the Girl Scout Leadership Experience

Girl Scouting is about building strong leaders. Founded in 1912, Girl Scouting is the premier leadership development organization for girls ages 5-17 in America. With 3.7 million members worldwide, Girl Scouts has a strong history of encouraging girls to become strong, confident young women. The Girl Scout Leadership Development Experience encourages girls to engage not just in traditional activities and service projects, but also in the process of leadership. Through hands-on opportunities, girls learn-by-doing in cooperative group settings and empowering individual explorations. Girl Scouting helps girls discover a strong sense of self, connect with others in a changing world, and take action to help make the world a better place.
